Bottle of the Week

Skipper 3 Year Old Demerara Rum

An easy way into one of rum's great regions.

World Rum Day lands on 11 July, so we are spending the week in the Caribbean. Our pick is Skipper 3 Year Old Demerara Rum, a warm, unfussy Guyanese rum that does not ask much of your wallet and gives back plenty in the glass.

It is the kind of bottle that quietly earns a permanent spot on the shelf. Good enough to sip, cheap enough to mix, and honest about what it is.

What It Is

A bottle of Skipper 3 Year Old Demerara Rum
Skipper 3 Year Old, a Demerara rum from Guyana

Skipper is a Demerara rum, which means it comes from Guyana and traces back to the distilleries that sit along the Demerara river. That corner of South America has a long, rich rum history, much of it made on old wooden pot and column stills that give the spirit its dark, treacly depth.

This one is blended and aged three years in oak. That is not a long time, but it is enough to round off the edges and pull out some colour and sweetness. It sits at 40% ABV, so it is approachable rather than fiery.

How It Tastes

Expect caramel first, then a run of ripe fruit: grilled pineapple, soft banana, a little vanilla. The oak shows up towards the end and keeps it from tipping into syrupy territory. It is rich without being heavy, which is exactly what you want from an everyday rum.

Drink it neat if you like a bit of sweetness, or over a single big cube on a warm evening. It also happens to be a very good mixing rum. Stretch it with ginger beer and lime for a dark and stormy, or build it into a rum old fashioned when you want something slower.

Who It's For

If your rum experience so far has been white rum in a mojito or a spiced bottle at the back of a cupboard, this is a gentle step up. It shows you what aged Caribbean rum is about without a collector's price tag.

For anyone already deep into rum, it is a reliable house pour, the bottle you reach for on a Tuesday rather than saving for a special occasion.
