The Balvenie is a Speyside single malt made in Dufftown, next door to Glenfiddich, since 1892. It is one of the few distilleries that still grows some of its own barley, keeps traditional floor maltings, and employs its own coppersmith and coopers on site. The house style is honeyed and rounded, and much of the range is built on cask finishing, moving whisky into a second cask to add layers of flavour. Expect honey, vanilla, orchard fruit and warm oak spice.

Where Balvenie sits among the Speyside single malts

The Balvenie was founded in 1892 by William Grant, in Dufftown, on the same ground as its better-known neighbour Glenfiddich. It has stayed in the same family since. What sets it apart is how much is still done by hand: the distillery keeps traditional floor maltings, grows some of its own barley, and employs a resident coppersmith and a team of coopers on site.

The house style is honeyed and rounded rather than smoky. Think heather honey, vanilla, orchard fruit and warm oak spice. Much of the range is built on cask finishing, the practice of moving mature whisky into a second cask for a spell to layer in new flavour. The 12 Year Old DoubleWood is the bottling that made this idea famous, and the age ladder above it swaps the finishing cask to change the character.

The everyday starting point

Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood

Matured first in American oak, then finished in European sherry oak. Honey, vanilla and dried fruit over a soft, rounded body. The bottle that made cask finishing famous and the easiest way into the house style.

The sweeter step up

Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask

Finished in casks that once held rum. Extra sweetness on top of the honey, with vanilla, toffee and a hint of tropical fruit. Rounder and more indulgent than the DoubleWood.

The richer middle

Balvenie 16 Year Old French Oak

Finished in casks seasoned with sweet wine. Deeper orchard fruit, candied peel and a fuller, spicier oak note. A step up in weight from the younger bottlings.

The occasion pour

Balvenie 21 Year Old PortWood and older

Finished in port casks over long years in oak. Dried fruit, dark berry, honey and polished wood in a deep, elegant body. Bottlings for slow sipping, neat, with time in the glass.

How to Drink It

Balvenie is made for sipping neat. Pour the 12 Year Old DoubleWood into a tulip glass and give it a few minutes to open, then add a drop of water to lift the honey and vanilla. The cask-finished bottlings higher up the range reward patience, so take the Caribbean Cask and the PortWood slowly, after dinner, where the sweetness and dried fruit sit well against something rich.
