What makes Tennessee whiskey its own thing

Jasper Newton Daniel, known as Jack, registered his distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, in 1866. It is one of the oldest registered distilleries in the United States, and it still makes whiskey in the same small town today. The brand grew from those Tennessee hills into one of the most recognised American whiskeys in the world.

Tennessee whiskey starts life much like bourbon, a corn-led mash aged in new charred oak. The difference is one extra step. Before the spirit goes into the barrel, it is filtered slowly through several feet of sugar maple charcoal, a step known as the Lincoln County Process. That mellowing is what gives Jack Daniel's its signature: sweet, smooth and rounded, with banana, vanilla and toasted oak over a soft charcoal note rather than sharp grain.

Old No. 7

The flagship black label and the one most people picture. Sweet and mellow, with banana, vanilla, toasted oak and a soft charcoal note. Easy neat, over ice, or long with cola.

The double-mellowed step up

Gentleman Jack

Charcoal-mellowed a second time, once before the barrel and once after. Rounder and softer than Old No. 7, with more caramel, light fruit and a smooth, clean finish.

The one-barrel bottling

Single Barrel Select

Drawn from a single barrel rather than blended, so each is a little different. Bolder and richer, with deeper oak, spice, dried fruit and a warm, full body.

The higher-strength Jack

Bonded

Bottled in bond, so it is aged longer and bottled at full strength. More weight and grip than Old No. 7, with darker oak, baking spice and a longer, warming finish.

How to Drink It

Old No. 7 is built to be easy. Pour it neat, over a single large cube, or long with cola and a wedge of lime. Its sweetness also carries a whiskey sour and a Lynchburg lemonade well.
