Bowmore
"Islay's oldest single malt"
Bowmore is Islay's oldest distillery, working the shores of Loch Indaal since 1779. Its whisky sits in the middle of the Islay spectrum, gentler than the heavily peated south, smokier than the north. Expect balanced peat smoke, sea salt and ripe fruit, and a range that climbs from the everyday 12 Year Old to rare, deeply aged bottlings collectors chase.

Where Bowmore sits on the island's smoky spectrum
Bowmore was established in 1779 in the island's main town, on the shore of Loch Indaal. It is the oldest distillery on Islay and one of the oldest in Scotland, and it still malts some of its own barley on the floor, a practice most distilleries gave up long ago. Its whisky matures partly in the No. 1 Vaults, a warehouse below sea level where the sea lapping against the walls is said to shape the spirit.
What sets Bowmore apart is balance. The heavily peated malts come from the south of Islay, the lighter ones from the north, and Bowmore sits in between. The smoke is there, but it shares the glass with sea salt, honey and ripe fruit rather than dominating. That is why the 12 Year Old works as a first Islay malt, and why the older bottlings reward drinkers who already know the island.

The Age Ladder
How the core Bowmore bottlings sit against each other, accessible to collectible
The everyday Islay
Bowmore 12 Year Old
The house style at its most accessible. Gentle peat smoke over lemon and honey, a touch of sea salt, and a warm, easy finish. The bottle to start with.
The sherried step up
Bowmore 15 Year Old
Extra years in sherry casks pull the smoke into darker territory. Dried fruit, dark chocolate and toffee wrap around the Islay peat for a richer, rounder dram.
The mature middle
Bowmore 18 Year Old
Older oak softens the smoke and lifts the fruit. Ripe tropical notes, a wisp of coastal peat and a long, layered finish. The range hitting its stride.
The collector's Bowmore
Older and limited bottlings
The 25 Year Old and beyond, plus limited releases matured in the No. 1 Vaults. Decades in cask soften the peat to a coastal murmur, with waxy fruit and deep oak. Scarce, and priced to match.
